There are some things that just make me feel extra “grown-up” and professional. A pair of black, patent-leather, pointed-toe pumps. Blazers. My MacBook Pro. Going to networking events. Reading professional development books. Listening to podcasts during my morning commute. I’ve really grown to love all of these things and to embrace this working period of my life.
I’d been eyeing up one more thing to +1 my “young professional status” for a while, but hadn’t quite found the right one for my tastes, until recently:
watch timepiece. (Calling a watch a timepiece makes it sound extra fancy. Thanks, Levo.)
While we rely heavily on our devices to keep track of everything, there’s something to be said about telling time with the real deal. Watches are the perfect practical accessory that can dress up or add interest to any outfit (and can keep phones away to minimize distractions, especially during a date or an interview. #winning).
Though I have dreams of owning a beautiful Kate Spade watch, I’ve been on the hunt for something a little more unique and affordable. Enter JORD Wooden Watches. This company came to me by chance, but I’ve been swooning ever since.
JORD watches are made out of natural materials with stunning faces, a combination that makes a really unique statement. I was drawn to the Ely series in Cherry, but there are so many other beautiful options to choose from, featuring both classic and modern styles.
I’ve already worn my watch on a handful of occasions and my colleagues and friends have done a double-take every time they see my wrist. I really enjoy that it can be dressed up or down and worn for any season. I think it will look particularly lovely in the fall (oooh already thinking of the possibilities!). You can definitely check out other ways I’ve styled it on my Instagram.
And hey guys, there’s something for you, too! JORD Wood Watches are perfect for classic guys who are a little edgier. My friend Paul sports the Delmar in Blue, which fits in perfectly with his “hipster” architect lifestyle, both for casual and more formal events.
Both of our watches are affordable, coming in at under $150 each. Given that the time pieces are made out of wood, you might expect them to be flimsy, but the quality is quite impressive. Though I wouldn’t necessarily dunk my hands in water or flail them around without any care (I know, I know, a little self-restraint is indeed necessary…), I feel confident that they will stay in great shape for years to come.
Probably my favorite thing about my JORD watch (besides that I love wearing it) is that I’m supporting a company founded by a millennial entrepreneur! Salman Shah founded JORD with the vision to build a multi-gender, multi-cultural brand while cultivating a tradition of ethics, conservation, and social support. He believes:
“Analog watches are experiencing a renaissance in a time when everything is being moved to a digital platform. There is function in fashion and I think that’s why people are returning to wearing watches, even if they’re still checking the time on their phone.”
Perhaps instead of taking the Apple Watch approach, a stylish wristwatch is the way to go for those of us who aren’t quite ready to take on wearable technology. These watches also make fantastic Father’s Day gifts (cough cough).

Disclaimer: I received these watches in exchange for a review. As always, I only share the brands that I value and would purchase from anyway! Thanks for supporting the brands that make Ampersand Creative possible.
