Seemingly every season introduces a new player in the social media field that takes the blogging community by storm. Some of them only stick around for a season or two, while others rise to the top of preferred platforms. If you haven’t jumped on the Periscope bandwagon yet, you may want to reconsider. Even if its popularity only lasts for a momentary glimpse of time, the benefits can be HUGE for bloggers and entrepreneurs right now. Though I’m fairly new to this live streaming video app, I have already found it to be a perfect complement to a creativepreneur’s content and brand, both as a broadcaster AND as an audience member.

What is Periscope?
Periscope is an app that allows you to stream and watch live video while being directly connected with your audience. Instead of passively watching, you can engage with broadcasters by commenting or tapping your screen to shower them with “hearts.” The app is a Twitter extension, allowing you to leverage your Twitter audience in addition to building your own following.
Why Periscope is the Perfect Compliment to Your Content and Brand
1| It’s live and uncut.
Live streaming is the ideal way to inject your personality into your brand and content. By presenting yourself in an unedited, transparent way on Periscope, your audience can automatically gauge that…hey, you’re actually normal! And hey, you’ve got crazy hair days and messy desktops and you say “umm” and you sometimes lose your train of thought and you go with the flow. But being a normal person AND having something awesome to say makes you an insta-inspiration, someone people love to tune in to see. It’s the same psychology behind why we obsess over behind-the-scenes action or a day-in-the-life: it keys us in to what you’re really like and how you manage to do what you do anyway.
2 | It’s short and digestible.
Ain’t nobody got time for webinars every single day of the week. As valuable as they are, there’s no way your audience can tune in for one on the regular. But a quick five or ten minute or even half hour broadcast? Totally doable! It’s a nice contrast and complement to the long-form content we love that takes more time to soak in. And because of Periscope’s Twitter extension, it makes it really easy to hop into a broadcast without notice ahead of time. If you have a spare minute or two, you’re more likely to jump into a Periscope broadcast than you are to register for and tune in to a webinar. And there’s still just as much value in both![Tweet “#Periscope provides the value of a webinar in a short + digestible format.”]
3| It positions you as the expert and leader.
When you are a broadcaster on Periscope, your audience is tuning in specifically to hear from YOU. They want to learn from and engage with you and share what you have to say with their followers. While participants can definitely influence and shift the direction of the broadcast based on how they respond, you have the full reigns on where the broadcast goes. As a broadcaster, you can use the platform for customer service, new product announcements, Q&A sessions, mini workshops, and more. Check out these amazing ways Chloe suggests you use Periscope for your business. This position as a thought-leader is seriously valuable, as listeners get a taste of what you can offer on your blog and in your business and will be more likely to continue to follow you, and perhaps work with you, in the future.
4 | It combines the best of all of the social platforms.
Periscope offers the short, rapid engagement of Twitter with comments, the “hearts” of Instagram, the inspirational aspect of Pinterest, the video popularity of YouTube, the live streaming of Google+ Hangouts, and the personal connection and short shelf-life timeliness of Facebook. It’s best of all worlds. What are you waiting for?
Whether you choose to tune in Periscope simply as an audience member or as a brave broadcaster, you have the potential of spreading awareness about you, your content, and your brand in a unique, fun, and engaging atmosphere. Let me know in comments how YOU use Periscope so I can tune in and watch!
